In wealthy Brazilian neighbourhoods, the right to private property is protected by multiple locks, high fences, and surveillance cameras. Robust and all-powerful security systems grace the screen while the words of a European traveller from colonial Brazil depict an exotic, imagined paradise. Woven into his story are the words of the “porteiro.” Both concierge and guard, porteiros are responsible for maintaining the order and normality of each building: “people without possessions who protect the others’ possessions.” The film urban solutions highlights the burden of colonial legacy and the open wounds left by a slave-owning past, whose effects are still starkly visible in the organization of modern Brazilian society.
