International Short and Medium-Length Competition

Fuku Nashi Julie Sando

Swiss-Japanese filmmaker and artist Julie Sando travels to Japan to see her grandmother. From the opening shots, she appears to be reminded of her foreignness in this place, alone under the lights of a mysteriously calm night. Masterful direction and intelligent camerawork express the distance that exists between the two women. Gradually, the distance dwindles, and words flow more easily around the mundane actions that encourage communication. Fusing reality and fiction, this personal work explores the filmmaker’s complex search for identity and her struggle as she longs to become more rooted in her Japanese heritage by rebuilding this family relationship.
