Back from space after a mission protecting natural resources, an astronaut returns to the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Dressed in a futuristic metallic suit, he wanders the city, drawing amused and curious looks from the locals. He is soon alienated by his neighbours, family, and friends and must try to find a way to reconnect with his identity and roots. Mulika blurs the boundaries of fiction and documentary with its Afrofuturist themes, using science fiction to navigate issues anchored in reality, such as mineral mining in the Congo and the repercussions for its people, who do not benefit from it.
