Mal di mare
In a dreamlike state of an adoration ritual to the divinity of the sea, gentle waves merge with a Black body. It’s the calm before the storm. The ancestral dream gives way to an artist’s recurring nightmare, emphasizing his powerlessness against the violence his ancestors suffered. This is the prelude to a powerful, provocative work that unfolds into a spontaneous film-performance, bearing witness to another kind of violence rooted in today’s systemic racism. Phone in hand, João Vieira Torres walks like a ghost through a Venice Bienniale exhibition, denouncing the white gaze and white supremacy in the arts by asking a simple question no one dares answer.
