Delving into her mother-in-law’s VHS archives, Chilean director Tana Gilbert seems to be looking in a mirror. Diligently, Cecilia made it her mission to record her family life, but she has never revisited the videos she had made over the course of 15 years. As family faces appear on the screen, a tacit and mutual comprehension sets in through an introspective dialogue deftly teasing out themes of burnout, depression, divorce, and empty nest syndrome. No star emerges from an artistic process of family archeology, opening an intimate and lucid exchange between two women of different generations, united by missed feelings toward motherhood.
