This first feature by Filipino director Joseph Mangat immerses us in a factory producing religious items on the outskirts of Manilla, the capital of the Philippines—the only predominately Catholic country in Asia. This multi-voice film explores the building that serves as a factory and shop, listening to employees who are subjected to precarious work conditions to produce objects of adoration. Several of the workers belong to the LGBTQ+ community and are themselves Christians, adding another unique layer to this mosaic. Divine Factory depicts a microcosm of a society and its contradictions, looking at the complex relationship between faith and capitalism.
