In her first feature, Olha Zhurba combines compassion and authentic storytelling to explore Roma’s compelling yet difficult childhood. Filmed over several years and structured in a non-linear way, the story follows various moments of Roma’s life, marked by the loss of his mother, abandonment, violence, and abuse. We follow his journey from 13, surviving on the streets of Kiev alone during the Maidan revolution until he falls into a life of petty crime and is arrested at 18. Intimate phone conversations against a black screen between Roma and Olha provide profound moments of reflection on loneliness and growing up without care.
