French-Malian worker Bouba Touré turned to photography in the 1960s and 70s. Using several formats, he documented various fights to improve conditions for migrant workers in France, counter discrimination and racism, and resist colonialism. In 1977, with his fellow activists, he travelled to the banks of the Senegal River in Mali to develop a pioneering agricultural cooperative called Somankidi Coura while the Sahel region was in drought. Mainly drawing on Touré’s archives, this political feature plunges us into the intersecting story of a movement of resistance and decolonization and exposes a migration driven by the desire for emancipation and food independence.
