What About China? is composed mainly of images shot in Hi8 by filmmaker Trinh T. Minh-ha in 1993 and 1994 and assembled in a striking montage. Minh films the Chinese countryside, and a series of voices take turns sharing a personal experience, an excerpt of a poem, a traditional song, resulting in a reflection on China and its transformation from yesterday to tomorrow. In the continuity of a cinematographic work of great intellectual vitality since her 1982 film Reassemblage, the multidisciplinary artist and theorist questions cinema, the ethnographic approach and the construction of history through a compelling essay, as cerebral as it is tender. A true study in cinema.
