La République du Silence
“This film begins without images. There is no image for what I’ve seen.” From the first moments of Republic of Silence, these words, written on a black background, establish the film’s intention to reflect on images and the representation of history. Taking a personal, autobiographical approach and steering clear of preaching, filmmaker Diana El Jeiroudi bears witness to the collective tragedy of the Syrian people. With an artistically assertive, non-linear narrative with intelligent editing and subtle sound design, this film of epic proportions offers a unique view of the Syrian conflict and the daily life of an exile haunted by memories of a country and a life marked by war.
