Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras returns with a biography of acclaimed US photographer Nan Goldin, a key figure in the arts since the early 1980s. In Goldin’s striking depiction of the New York underground scene of which she was a part, she often photographed herself and, with an intimate and affectionate approach, captured her community at its most raw. The vulnerability inherent in her photos gains a new dimension in this film as the artist describes some of the most challenging moments of her life, including her dependency on highly addictive painkillers. Stepping deftly between the present and past, All the Beauties and the Bloodshed is a moving portrayal of a unique artist and an activist’s fight against those responsible for the opioid crisis.
