On August 11, 1999, a solar eclipse momentarily plunged most of Europe into darkness. Exploring the metaphorical potential of this event, Nataša Urban dives with focused enthusiasm into the intimate and collective experience of war in the former Yugoslavia. Through reading her father’s diary about walks across landscapes during the war and a collection of stories from friends and family, the filmmaker poetically explores individual scars and social traumas. Shot on film, a profoundly political artistic choice inviting reflection on memory and archives, The Eclipse examines the physical and mental traces of a still-visible past to disrupt collective amnesia.
