In the language of the Ayoreo Totobiegosode, “Eami” means forest and world. In the form of a visual poem enveloped in the sensory atmosphere of nature and infused with the spirituality of the Indigenous people of Paraguay, this piercing film translates and gives meaning to an apparent linguistic ambiguity. A young girl embodies the spirit of a bird to escape her ancestral land being invaded by white men. As her soft voice narrates her journey, her tale is dramatized and interwoven with testimonies of victims of an ongoing genocide. Paz Encina directs an allegorical essay on the sovereignty and healing of a people forced to leave the forest, the only world they have known.
