Following the success of her 2019 short film of the same name, Morgane Dziurla-Petit revisits the eccentric world of her family and small hometown in northern France in Excess Will Save Us. This brilliant work is centered around a tragi-comic incident, in which a frightened resident alerts the authorities to a suspected terrorist threat—which turns out to be an unfortunate misunderstanding generated by the witnessing of a discussion between migrant workers. The filmmaker brings real people and fictional characters together in a playful and often hilarious environment, while also calling out the absurdity of xenophobia, the paranoia sown by the media, and the conservative villagers’ rejection of anything outside the norm.
