Through documentary and fiction films alike, the world of skateboarding has been used to look at adolescence for generations. Brightly lit with pastel colours, imbued with sensitivity and warmth, Summer Nights adds to this tradition of portraits of teenage freedom, capturing the experience of a summer spent roaming the city at night. The sound of skateboards on different shades and textures of concrete and asphalt harmonizes with the voices of various speakers, shot close-up, as they talk about everything and nothing: Lightning McQueen, bleached hair, or plans and dreams for the future. A thoughtful ode to the candour and hopefulness of youth and to the simple pleasure of summer nights.
