This work by Filipa César and Sónia Vaz Borges looks at an anticolonial project set up by Amílcar Cabral, a leader in the struggle for the liberation of Guinea-Bissau from Portuguese rule in the 1960s and 70s. This film, rich in its historical research and metaphorical visual exploration, takes viewers deep into the jungle, into the murky waters where the mangrove trees grow. Here, the past is re-staged and comes to life as we see classrooms constructed along the knotted roots of the trees; branches become school benches where children are educated. Mangrove School is a powerful political poem about anti-colonial struggle, resistance and ultimately liberation.
