This second feature by Canadian filmmaker and visual artist Joële Walinga (Berlinale Talents 2021) offers an original portrait of our times, pieced together from a diverse range of images captured over four years by surveillance cameras from around the world. Building on an intensive work of research and extensive shot selection, material has been edited to follow the rhythm of the seasons, cleverly shaping raw reality into a reflective and thought-provoking whole. Subverting its images’ primary functions of surveillance and protection, Self-Portrait skillfully juxtaposes sequences to tease out a host of meanings. At the same time, it serves as a witness to the heavy presence of cameras in our environments and lives.
