Montreal, Thursday, October 21, 2021 - The 17th edition of Forum RIDM will take place from November 13 to 17, 2021. This year, the Forum will be in a hybrid format combining in-person events at the Cinémathèque québécoise and virtual activities that will allow for international participation. As such, and in accordance with current health measures, this edition will once again bring documentary industry members together for five days of programming.
Enriched, refreshed and reshaped, the major activities of this essential professional gathering are back for its 2021 edition, including the Talent Lab, presented by Netflix, the Création Plurielle workshop series presented by the Bell Fund, and the connected One-on-One pitch event presented in collaboration with the Alliance des producteurs francophones du Canada. Two virtual roundtables, one dedicated to Canadian funds and another to experts from the documentary industry, will once again allow Forum participants to meet and share ideas with key professionals in their field.
This year’s Forum draws on the expertise of guest collaborators who took part in developing a portion of the activities: Ana Alice de Morais (Talent Lab), Colette Loumède (Focus on Co-production), and Larissa Christoforo (Working breakfast and Création Plurielle series). Their participation has greatly contributed to the quality and richness of the 2021 program.
Forum RIDM will kick off with an opening breakfast with Picbois Productions to discuss high-impact production in documentary, presented by the Canada Media Fund. In addition to the traditional Rough Cut Lab and Doc Hour panel presented by Doc Québec, this year’s program features two new discussion activities: a working breakfast where creators will have the chance to discuss and reflect on issues of representation and diversity of perspectives; and a screening-discussion presented by the Bell Fund as part of the Création Plurielle series, where professionals and Forum audiences will meet to share their impressions of a film, with the participation of the filmmaker.
The Forum will also include several professional workshops including the Focus on Co-production, designed and hosted by producer Colette Loumède, entitled “Is International co-production a good deal?” The Forum also welcomes back Doc Ignite: Writing for Documentary Funds in collaboration with Hot Docs.
The Forum is thrilled to offer professionals this hybrid format and to provide opportunities for development, business meetings, funding, and knowledge sharing between industry members.
CONNECTED ONE-ON-ONE | November 16 and 17
The One-on-One event will take place online over two half-days and will offer individual, 15-minute meetings between producers, filmmakers, and industry representatives. The inclusion of more than 60 local and international industry members makes this a unique opportunity to create new partnerships and increase the scope of new projects, despite physical distance. The One-on-One pitch event is presented in collaboration with the Alliance des producteurs francophones du Canada.
Thanks to the online format, we can look forward to welcoming several international industry representatives from a dozen different countries.

TALENT LAB 2021 | November 13, 14, and 15
The 8th edition of the Forum RIDM Talent Lab is presented by Netflix. This professional and creative development activity gives 16 emerging Canadian filmmakers the chance to benefit from masterclasses and discussions with creators and experts from the documentary industry over three days.
As part of the Talent Lab, four prizes in the form of support will be awarded to selected participants on behalf of our partners CANAL D, ONF, NFB, and CINEGROUND.
A Talent Lab 2021 accreditation is awarded to the winner of the Regard sur Montréal 2020 residency by the Conseil des arts de Montréal.
CRÉATION PLURIELLE SERIES | November 16 and 17
In collaboration with the Bell Fund, the Création Plurielle series continues to promote inclusive and supportive practices within the documentary film community. The 2021 series has been designed by Larissa Christoforo, executive director of the M.É.D.I.A. Coalition. The series comprises several activities including a discussion on issues of representation in documentaries. We also look forward to the Création Plurielle workshops, which aim to respond to the needs of professionals from First Nations, Inuit, Métis, Afrodescendent, and racialized communities submitting an audiovisual project.
