RIDM+ FEBRUARY

Minding the Gap by Bing Liu
Wednesday, February 27 at 7 p.m. at Cinéma du Parc

Montreal, Monday, February 18, 2019– The Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) is pleased to present its year-round RIDM+ series of documentaries previously unseen in Quebec, presented by Télé-Québec. In February, cinephiles will have the chance to see Bing Liu’s Minding the Gap, which, along with Hale County This Morning, This Evening, was the revelation of the 2018 Sundance Festival. After winning most of the documentary awards last year, Minding the Gap is now in the running for the Oscar for Best Documentary. It will be screened on Wednesday, February 27 at 7 p.m. at Cinéma du Parc.

The first feature film by Bing Liu, Minding the Gap tells the story of a young man who is determined to use cinema to confront his past and expose the social and racial injustices that affect many young Americans. Taking the form of a brave and lucid autobiographical essay, framed within a well-developed cinematic vision, Minding the Gap explores the difficulties of youth and the challenges facing the filmmaker and his two best friends, Zake and Keire.

Liu, Zake and Keire are natives of Rockford, a typical Rust Belt town, and all three are avid skateboarders. Capturing their passion through editing and superb camerawork, Liu celebrates the sense of freedom skateboarding gives the friends. He also explores the family traumas and injustices each of the three has suffered. A therapeutic film in the best sense, Minding the Gap is a deeply personal and subtly political work that announces the arrival of a major voice in contemporary American documentary cinema.
