Montreal, October 19, 2016 – Doc Circuit Montréal (DCM) is proud to announce the addition of a new parallel activity: KINO VR with the financial support of the Bell Fund, and presented in collaboration with the NFB. The inaugural edition will take place from November 11 to 13, just before the Talent Lab and Doc Circuit Montréal’s regular program from November 12 to 16.
KINO VR is a creative adaptation of the hackathon format: four teams, each with four members, will be formed in advance and will have three days to develop a virtual reality prototype. Each team will be composed of professionals from a variety of fields: one documentary director, one virtual reality programmer/developer, one virtual reality storytelling expert, and one artist from another discipline (photography, choreography, visual arts, gaming).
Inspired by Montreal’s own Kino Kabaret movement, the teams will be assigned a theme and encouraged to develop their prototype together, spontaneously and collaboratively, over the three days. Each member will contribute essential expertise to the project, and mentors and experts will guide the teams in their work.
KINO VR is a non-competitive event reserved for pre-selected participants. It will conclude with a public presentation of the prototypes on Sunday, November 13 at the RIDM’s festival Headquarters. VR experts, funders and creators will discuss the progress and potential of the four projects.
To kick off KINO VR, Doc Circuit Montréal, in collaboration with MUTEK_IMG / VR SALON, will hold the VR (anti) Manifesto on November 11 in the Moment Factory studio. The aim of this roundtable is to discuss virtual-reality practices in order to inspire new ways of thinking about the medium. Designers, artists and theoreticians will present detailed arguments supported by case studies, images and data, and will tackle issues of representation, neuroscience, art and technology.
