Montreal, Tuesday, October 18, 2016 – Doc Circuit Montréal’s (DCM) 12 edition will be held from November 12 to 16 2016. With over 30 events programmed and over 400 local and international guests and delegates, DCM is a key market for documentary professionals looking to finance their projects and meet new collaborators.
This year’s programming is streamlined to the needs and requests of our documentary community, with a focus on funding for creative documentaries and rigorous issue-driven stories. Invited experts and buyers will bring new perspectives on international coproduction, distribution models, financing for short form and online content, as well as for features, series, and Virtual Reality (VR) projects. In 2016, DCM welcomes over 30 new Decision Makers committed to finding documentary content. With the core mandate of facilitating the creation of canadian documentaries, DCM’s programming this year offers 3 initiatives for emerging filmmakers and producers, 3 pitching events, 10 networking opportunities, 20 workshops and conferences, as well as a creative Virtual Reality Lab, the KINO VR. Not to be missed, our favourite DCM classics will also return this year: the celebrated Talent Lab and ROUGH CUT Session, the Beat Dox: Doc + Music event, and the lively Cuban Hat and Eurodoc Pitches. DCM’s central attraction, the bustling and ever-productive One-on-One Pitches, will take place all day on November 15.
ACTIVITIES FOR EMERGING FILMMAKERS + PRODUCERS
One-on-One for Emerging Filmmakers - October 5 The One-on-One for Emerging Filmmakers is a two-day event for 10 selected emerging filmmakers. Following a call for projects, the up‐and‐coming filmmakers received pitch training in preparation for a full day of pitches and meetings with ten established producers on October 5.
Talent Lab 2016 - November 12 to 14 The third edition of the DCM Talent Lab will bring together a select group of forty emerging and mid-career Canadian creators for three full days of specialized conferences and exploratory workshops, with a roster of artists and experts from the RIDM and Doc Circuit Montréal programmes. A tailor-made mentorship programme will also be awarded to 7 participants. A 10 000$ development grant will be awarded to a Canadian francophone project by Canal D, and the Peter-Wintonick Travel Grant will be offered to an out-of-province participant courtesy of generous members of the Montreal documentary community.
Cuban Hat Pitch - November 14 2016 welcomes the 6th edition of the Cuban Hat Pitch. An online vote and a tough jury deliberation has narrowed down all submissions to 5 carefully selected projects, which will be pitched in front of the notoriously energetic Cuban Hat Pitch audience in order to win cash prizes and services worth over 44,000$.
The Cuban Hat Pitch is one of DCM’s biggest events and showcases the community’s collective support for promising documentary projects.

Indigenous Videographers Shoot Back - November 12 Shoot Back is a manifesto of sorts, inviting a reversal/refusal of the traditional tropes of representing native stories. A constellation of Ojibway, Abenaki and Inuit artists and filmmakers discuss their own practices and processes, debate their disentanglement from the grips of colonial storytelling, and propose instead an energized and authentic engagement with places, people, and histories. With Alanis Obomsawin, Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, Isabella Weetaluktuk, Zach and Adam Khalil, and moderated by Audra Simpson.
Where Truth Lies: Opening Breakfast - November 14 DCM’s 2016 Opening Keynote tackles the idea of Documentary Truth face on, with a constellation of different creators, including guest speaker Penny Lane, discussing the fine but perplexingly blurry line between journalistic truth and documentary reality.
A Conversation Between Jonathan Harris & Melissa Auf der Maur - November 14 Montreal native Melissa Auf der Maur (Peter and the Farm) and Jonathan Harris (Network Effect installation) both pioneers and legends in their own right, will sit together and have an organic, unscripted conversation about creativity, community, and career sea-changes.
Roundtables for New Decision Makers - November 14 Six new Decision Makers, six tables. Rotating through the room, each Decision Maker will lead a 20-minute meeting at each table, offering all participants the opportunity to gain different perspectives on the wealth of options available for funding non-fiction films.
The Ear Imagines - November 16 "The eye is lazy; the ear, on the contrary, imagines." - Bresson (Cahiers du Cinéma). Podcast producers Lulu Miller (Radiolab, Invisibilia), Cristal Duhaime and Mira Burt-Wintonick (Love Me) and Tally Abecassis (First Day Back) discuss the power of audio and how some stories are best told in waveform only.
EURODOC Pitch - November 16 For the third consecutive year, five producers will pitch their projects to a jury of European broadcasters and EURODOC representatives in the hope of being selected as the sole Québécois participant in the prestigious EURODOC co-production training programme, which takes place intermittently over an entire year, in three week-long working sessions in different European locations.
ONE-ON-ONE PITCHES - NOVEMBER 15
The One-on-One Pitches is a full day of 15 minute meetings between documentary producers, filmmakers, and decision makers. It is a unique opportunity for creators and decision makers alike to forge new partnerships and bring new projects to life. In 2016, we welcome 68 Decision Makers from 9 different countries.
The One-on-Ones also include the 1:1 Meetings, a section dedicated to consultations with experts from a variety of backgrounds, including interactive and VR, music, strategy consultants (festival, distribution, financing, legal) and coproduction.
New Decision Makers this year include, TV 2M Morocco, Discovery Channel US, Field_Of_Vision, The Cinema Guild, Kino Lorber, Unobstructed View, the Independent Filmmaker Project, the Points North Institute, The Globe and Mail, POV Digital, and the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program’s Art of Nonfiction Initiative.
Among our returning Decision Makers, we welcome the following broadcasters: Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN), American Documentary | POV, ARTE GEIE, ARTE, CBC, Canal D, Documentary Channel, France Télévisions, ICI ARTV, ICI EXPLORA, Radio-Canada, Télé-Québec and TV5/Unis. Distributors will include Documentary Educational Resources (DER), Filmoption International, Film Republic, GATHR, Collection de vidéos éducatives (CVE), Les Films du 3 mars, Vidéographe and the Cinema Politica Network. Interactive and online platforms will be represented by ARTE France, CBC Digital Docs, the Harmony Institute, and the NFB.
Many festival programmers will also be taking meetings and many will be present for the Premiere Status Anxiety: Meet the Festivals event on Monday November 14.
